한동대는 글로벌 대학을 표방한다. 각종 한동대 홍보영상에는 외국인 학생과 한국인 학생이 어울려 공부하는 장면이 단골처럼 등장한다. 주변을 둘러보면 외국인, 혹은 외국에서 살다 온 학생들을 쉽게 만나볼 수 있다. 그렇다면 한동대는 정말 글로벌 대학일까. 질문에 대답하기 위해서는 가장 먼저 한동대를 구성하는 외국인 학생들을 살펴봐야 한다.
한동신문은 오래전부터 한동대의 ‘글로벌’에 의문을 던졌다. 2015년 3호에 걸쳐 연재된 ‘한동대와 외국인 학생의 불편한 만남’은 학교 행정, 학생 사회, 강의 세 부분에 걸쳐 외국인 학생의 불편함을 살펴봤다. 기사는 한글로만 이뤄지는 교내정보사이트(HISNet) 공지, 외국인과 한국인 학생 교류 부족, 한글이 섞인 영어 강의 등을 지적했다. 2년이 지난 현재까지 유효한 문제다. 여전히 한동대는 글로벌 대학을 외치고, 외국인 학생들은 각종 정보와 모임에서 소외된다.
이에 더해, 외국인 학생들은 그들의 언론을 잃었다. 한동대 영자신문사 ‘한동 투데이’까지 활동을 중단한 것이다. 이는 외국인 학생들이 정보를 얻고 목소리를 전할 창구가 사라졌음을 의미한다. 글로벌 대학에 걸맞지 않은, 부끄러운 단상이다.
글로벌 면은 이같은 부끄러움에서 탄생했다. 한동신문은 모든 한동대 학생들을 위해 존재하지만, 실제로는 일부 한동대 학생만을 위한 신문이었음을 반성한다. 영자신문사까지 사라진 지금, 더는 미룰 수 없어 고민 끝에 면 하나를 외국인 학생들을 위한 면으로 꾸몄다. 부족하고 모자라 보이는 시작이다. 시작이 부족한 만큼 더 겸손한 마음으로, 모두의 한동신문이 되기 위해 더 많이 노력하겠다. 외국인 학생도, 한국인 학생도 모두 즐길 수 있는 글로벌 면이 되길 바란다.

Handong Global University calls itself a global university. In its promotional videos, there are evident number of scenes that captures active interactions between the foreign and Korean students. When you look around the campus, you can easily spot a foreign student. Does this make Handong Global University a global university? The first step to answer this is to look at the foreign students who make up Handong Global University.
Handong Press has long questioned the “global” aspect of Handong Global University. The 'Un-comfortable Encounters of Handong Global University And Foreign Students' series, which was published in 2015, examined the discomfort of foreign students in three areas: school administration, social welfare, and lectures. The article addressed the inconvenience of the foreign students in reading the notices, only written in Korean, on HISNet website, the lack of interactions between the foreign and local students, and English lectures that are instead conducted in Korean. These problems still prevail even after 2 years. Despite the apparent exclusiveness, Handong Global University shouts ‘global’ as one of its unique personality.
In addition, the foreign students have lost their Media. Handong Today, an English newspaper, has stopped being published. This means that the window for foreign students to get information and to communicate their voices has disappeared. The lack of equal availability of media is very unfortunate and unacceptable for a university which claims to be a ‘global’ university. The Handong Press that was meant to be a newspaper for all Handong students, has merely been a media for only the majority of the Handong students. Now that the English-language newspaper has completely disappeared, we cannot postpone its revival further. As a result, a page of the Handong Press is made available for English articles. The beginning looks short and insufficient. However, with a humble mind, we will try harder to become a true Handong newspaper. I hope that the Global page will be a page that both foreign students and Korean students can enjoy.
