Hanst with Generation of Dream

Many people struggled to make better I-Hanst every year

Advances of I-Hanst is foundational to global university

Despite its name, Handong global university needs persistent efforts toward ‘global’. In respect of the beginning of life in Handong for every international student, I-Hanst is a cornerstone of global university. This is important for international students who may have to adjust to a new school environment. 2017 I-Hanst for generation of dream was held in an active atmosphere, and a lot of students participated in a lively way.
“I really enjoyed this I-Hanst, it was excited that every single one is unique and has different country and background,”said Noh Hyun joo, who is an assistant manager of I-Hanst event team. “It was great that many active students enthusiastically participated in many programs of I-Hanst in spite of heavy schedule and jet lag,”Noh said. Brenda(Kim Seo Yeon), the director of 2017 I-Hanst, said, “One of the impressive events was that one international student who refused foot-washing ceremony first, came back and crying, and asked us if she could participate if not too late. She said she heard what her friends said and changed her mind, and she cried while professor was washing and praying for her. This was a merciful and touching scene to people who served.”
However, 2017 I-Hanst leaves something to be desired as well, for example, participants could not watch the club performances, and the training camp for staff was too short to prepare I-Hanst enough. This led to communication problems between staffs during I-Hanst, which made several operations inefficient. In addition, problem of English provision is most likely to occur in I-Hanst for international students. Brenda said, “We always have to make suggestions to the Hanst administration team or the school for offering parts about English during managing I-Hanst.” She added. “To match university’s name and reputation, I think every program should be provided in English as well without suggestion.”
Like purpose of Hanst, through the orientation I-Hanst aims to integrate international students with the Handong community after the beginning of the semester. “I think the university should reconsider that we have a distinction of forming a team with both Korean and international people,” Brenda said. “I hope many people within the university will know that Hanst and I-Hanst have the same aim and goal even though they have proceeded in a different way, and that does not mean Hanst and I-Hanst are different events.”
Meanwhile, I-Hanst is International Handong Spiritual Training Orientation Program for the new students of Carmichael college, which is held apart from Hanst. 2017 I-Hanst was held Feb. 20-24 in handong university, with 59 international students from 18 countries, such as Malawi, Rwanda, Argentine, Malaysia, and Jordan, and more than 70 Korean students participated in. Major activity contents are encouraging teamwork through ice breaking games, campus and Yukgeori city tour with carrying out missions, Honor Code Ceremony, Pilgrim’s Progress and foot-washing ceremony.
